The assignment was to design a poster showing the versatility and possibility of the font Akko Rounded Std. by Akira Kobayashi. The goal was to be eye catching, informative, and to encourage the viewer to purchase the font. Required details included: font name, brief history of the font, font designer's name, samples of available weights, {fictitious} pricing and contact information, and at least 3 colors.
The thing I learned about this font in my research is that the designer learned English in order to better design this font, and that he wanted it to feel friendly and happy. I wanted to showcase that in my design. My first step was to create dozens of thumbnail pencil sketches. From there, I took my favorites and went monochromatically digital.
I received feedback from my classmates and instructor, and then refined and ran with my best digital sketch and began exploring color palettes. At every stage, I generated several favorite options and struggled to discard my other ideas!
Once completed, I needed to add my poster to a mockup. I went through dozens of possible mockups. Many were the incorrect proportions, or just didn't present my project in a way I felt excited about. This subway scene with illumination and reflection really stood out to me, even though I needed to adjust the proportions to make it work. I'm sure most subway passengers are considering purchasing fonts while they are riding in the bleak hours, right? At the very least, hopefully this would give them something happy to look at.
