As my girls started getting older, I really wanted them to learn some ballroom dance.
I did ballroom dance in high school when I lived in Bogotá, Colombia, and I loved it. I wanted my girls to have a similar experience. My El Salvadorean roommate and I used to go dancing every weekend in college. Even today, one of my favorite activities is going salsa dancing. However, every studio I called that advertised a teen class didn't actually have one. I started calling studios and instructors again to see if I could help set one up, especially for the homeschool community. Every. Single. One. Ghosted. Me.
Except for Martin. Martin was great. Martin kept working with me to plan something out, and trusted me when I said I could get enough other homeschooled teens together to make a class. We eventually planned our way to a flyer. I made a black one to share online, and a white version that would be easier to print.
Today, instead of worrying about making the minimum 16 students per class each month, we have a class twice a month that regularly hosts 40-50 teens. I believe this is the most popular teen homeschool activity in all of Calgary.
I do all of the managerial things like advertising, attendance, and receipts, and Martin does all the teaching. My spreadsheet is very detailed and includes pages for attendance for each class and to make up receipts for families who pre-pay. Usually we end up with pretty close numbers for guys versus girls, but quite often, I'll get to dance lead and mingle with the kids. They're a great group, and it all started with a flyer ;)
